Recently, the "Jiangsu Culture" series of micro-documentaries produced by the Information Office of the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government released its newest chapter: Liuqing Bamboo Carving, a traditional handicraft of Changzhou.
The documentary was shown on the Big Screen in New York’s Times Square to promote Changzhou’s folk craft as an element of intangible cultural heritage.
As demonstrated in the documentary, most bamboo carvers draw their imagination on the bamboo surface, then manifest their works upon the Liuqing, the surface of bamboo, by pushing, carving, lifting, and stroking of knife as pen on bamboo as paper. The different color levels tell folk anecdotes and record ancient culture.
