The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in August rose by 2.7% year-on-year in Jiangsu, hitting a new high since June 2014.

In August, due to the impact of typhoon, the local production of leafy vegetables decreased by 20% compared with the same period of last year. Although the vegetables from other cities can guarantee the citizens’ demand, the increase in transportation and storage costs raised the selling prices. The price increase caused by the reduction in supply has also appeared in local pork sales due to the African swine fever epidemic occurred in Heilongjiang, Anhui, Jiangsu and some other provinces. August is also the peak season for summer tourism. The quotations of outbound travel programs by major travel agencies have generally increased by 10% to 30%. The tourist prices peaked on August 10-20. After August 20, as students returned to school, the prices started falling back.

In August, Jiangsu's CPI rose to a new high in 51 months. In addition to fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, tourism and other factors, gasoline, housing, daily necessities and services, education and culture, entertainment, health care and other factors also pushed up the price level of market basket of consumer goods and services of last month.
