Changzhou’s gross domestic product (GDP) for 2020 reached 780.53 billion yuan, an increase of 4.5 percent despite the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak, ranking third in Jiangsu province by growth rate.
Contributions to GDP are mainly divided into three broad sectors—primary industry (agriculture), secondary industry (construction and manufacturing) and tertiary industry (the service sector). As per the 2020 data of Changzhou, the value added of the primary industry was 16.43 billion yuan, up 3 percent from the year prior, that of the secondary industry was 361.62 billion, up by 4.2 percent, and that of the tertiary industry was 402.49 billion, an increase of 4.9 percent.
The gross output value of industrial enterprises above the designated size increased by 7.5 percent year on year. In terms of sectors, biomedical, metallurgical, machinery, electronics, and building materials industries have seen an increase in output value. Specifically, output of the biomedical industry rocketed a blistering 22.7 percent in 2020.
Revenue in the general public budget was 61.66 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.5 percent, ranking first in the province by growth rate.
Retail sales of consumer goods rose 0.8 percent year on year, reaching 242.14 billion yuan, ranking second in the province by growth rate.
In 2020, Changzhou's consumer price index (CPI) edged up 2.5 percent year on year, a 0.5-percentage-point decrease from 2019.
