From above, the Baizhang Depot of Changzhou Metro Line 1 reveals a transformation. The once empty rooftops of the storage buildings now sparkle with rows of solar panels. Changzhou Metro has successfully completed three solar power projects on the unused roofs of its vehicle depots, all of which are now connected to the grid and generating electricity.
These projects are located at the Baizhang Depot of Line 1, the Nanxiashu Parking Lot, and the Dingyan Depot of Line 2. Together, they can provide approximately 6.19 megawatts of renewable energy support for the metro's operation, generating over 6 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
Urban rail transit consumes significant energy. Alongside improving energy efficiency, it's crucial to embrace renewable energy to achieve a balance between energy generation and conservation.
In line with the goals of carbon neutrality and Changzhou's development as the new energy capital, Changzhou Metro conducted research on integrating green energy into its infrastructure. Last July, they launched the pilot project "Metro + PV."
The "Metro + PV" initiative utilizes the idle rooftops of warehouses at the Baizhang and Dingyan Depots of Lines 1 and 2. They have installed distributed solar power systems that are seamlessly integrated into the metro's power supply network. The objective is to achieve self-consumption while supplying surplus electricity to the grid.
Today, "Metro + PV" not only provides electricity for office and production purposes at the three depots but also maximizes the utilization of idle resources, creating an estimated annual economic benefit of over 4 million yuan.
